Summer special (give up the fight)

If you look closely, it does not make any sense sometimes to go against the flow: if for the past three weeks summer was happily, hottily and sunnily here, let's just embrace it, give up the fight (against the heat, the sun, the sand and whatnot), what do you say? Not to mention the panic at the announcement of a "heat wave" that may make our lives so unbearable.

Ok, this post is biased: due to my Mediterranean origins, where I come from 30 °C for a couple of months actually has a name, an official one: summer.

Ok again, I believe we may have all forgotten what that word means and, above all, the reality it covers. This is quite amazing though, if you think of it, since the earth we cherish so much has been feeling hot, very hot even, if the temperature curve the media feed us is anything to go by.

So, today's piece of wisdom from the beach is: let's stop fighting, let's block complaints out (you do not need acupuncture to do that, do you, Charlotte York?) and instead, let's give in, open the window, embrace this gorgeous and sometimes excessive season with a fizzy summer special: the "aperitivo". Traditionally, this is the end of the day socializing event in Italy (and maybe in other countries too, mind you) where you meet up in a bar, talk for hours, nibble at finger food and drink something refreshing. The homey version would be: back from the office, throw away shoes and bag - as far away as possible - practice on your breathing and aim for the fridge.

The next step is CAPITAL: grab a chilled Crodino bottle, its shiny and psychedelic orangey color will smile at you instantly. Smile back, drop a slice of orange (or lemon) in a glass, pour the bubbly summer potion and compliment with a few greener than green olives or salty bejewelled tarallini in a little cup and off you go, light as a feather!

Aim for the nearest deckchair, bench or couch. Sit back, relax and say thank you to the beautiful summer season.

  1. Malgré un planing assez surchargé par le taf, je prends tous les soirs un "crodino local" en famille (un pastaga, quoi, avec les olives du jardin !), sous l'arbre plein de cigales.
