A baby's life

Ever since our daughter arrived, almost a year and a half ago, a whole new world of unsuspected toys has unveiled itself to us, brand new parents. It is really interesting and even awe-inspiring to pay attention to the little, colorful objects that surround our baby and in which she finds great comfort and a wealth of ideas to keep her busy all the time (where, I ask you, where on earth does she find all that energy?).

For instance, she can play for "hours" with her wooden letter cubes, taking the time to show to me each and every letter or painted animal, while making funny sounds of astonishment and surprise, as if it were the first time that she saw them.

On the picture above are two of her favorite of the moment: the Hello Kitty bucket a dear friend gave her and in which she brews mysterious potions, and a book her grand parents gave her.

Books... Funnily enough, they seem to be already part of her baby's life: she now enjoys sitting down, legs apart, a book in the middle, and starts turning the pages carefully, wi her little hands. Every now and then, she stops, pointing her finger at one of the illustrated characters and says something in her magical baby language that the stars understand.

This brings me to a truly inspiring present idea for a newborn, a present that our daughter was lucky enough to receive herself: a subscription to a monthly magazine! Let me explain: obviously this is the kind of present that takes on its full meaning now, but believe me, it is a brilliant idea and way of bringing books around a baby from the beginning. Our dear friend Z took out a subscription to the Popi magazine and you should now see our daughter's face every time I open the mailbox and hand the new issue to her. She may not know what it is, yet, but she certainly understands it is for her and she can go ahead and unwrap it - now that's top fun! - and walk away proudly with the new prize in hand.

Apparently, books and picture books are being left behind. In order to lead my mini crusade against it, here is our list of our still very few good reads - from our home to yours:

-Popi (French)
-Petit Ours Brun (French)
-L'imagerie des bébés (French)
-Dikkie Dik (Dutch)
-Nijntje (Dutch)
-Coccole (Italian)

  1. Your daughter's French book collection and her admiration for them is very sweet. So true, how fascinating it is to watch children so engrossed in their world of books - pointing, dreaming, retelling! Thank you for the link to Nijntje, my son will love it! btw, my youngest is a big fan of the Trotro, Barbapapa and Babar infant books too ;) Hopefully the picture books won't go away anytime soon!

  2. Now that you mention Babar and Barbapapa I wonder how I did not think about those two before! Nijntje is a must in The Netherlands, every single kid has lots of stuff with the little character: clothes, toys, books!...
