Il Coperchio del Mare

Mari goes back to her roots, her home town and decides to open a small business selling grated ice flavored with traditional syrups. She's joined by a girl who will unexpectedly become a precious ally, a true friend.

The sea, the summer season and their rhythm and balance soon become the symbolic bond between the two girls, a bond they will only progressively share, step by step, carefully. There are many beings under the sea, many shades to its waters to discover, to marvel at and to learn from. The book is one of those Banana Yoshimoto's intimate stories that feels like soft strands of delicate algae swaying under the blue surface of our days. What lies beneath is true and unconditional friendship and understanding, made stronger by hope for a better, smoother life and a future where everyone would have their spot in the sun.

The two girl friends help each other and despite the end of the prodigal summer and of their ritual and healing swimming session across the canal, they know they will be there for each other. They have made progess, becoming richer, fuller human beings.

If you like Banana Yoshimoto's writing, this new ode to feelings and plain truths will please you every step of the way on the soft beach sand. It will leave a footprint that you can compare with yours, right before the tide erases it.
